by simplistic Western ideology, you undoubtedly have many questions and misconceptions about our traditional practices. We invite you to explore the truth and witness the sacred supernatural from its source
in Benin, West Africa.
This orisà/vodoun year, the High Council of the Voodoo Religion is planning events
which include; Ancestor Reverence, workshops on magic, ceremonies for cleansing and empowerment and training in herbal medicine. There will be events appropriate for all levels of study, from the novice to the fully
initiated, including the Voodoo Initiation Retreat.
The Celebration takes place in Zinvodun-zoumè village district of Ouidah near the sea, where Priests and Priestesses of OSAYIN, EGUNGUN, YEMAJA, OLOKUN, SHANGO, OGUN, OSHOSI, ESHU,
OSHUN, OBATALA and SAPONA meet and make a ceremony of ancestors remembrance , and celebrate African Culture. Women, men and
children will dance from group to group enjoying fried dough piled up in large baskets balanced on their heads. Kids play
in the sand. It is an altogether more salubrious scene than the dark and sinister Hollywood version of voodoo. It will be
more a high spiritual evolevement than the night of the living dead.
Voodoo, or Orisha, as it is practiced today, originated many hundred
years ago among the Yoruba people who live in an area comprising modern-day Togo,
Benin and parts of Nigeria. Followers of voodoo believe in an unapproachable god and an array of spirits who serve as intermediaries.
Slaves, forced to leave Benin's sandy shores in their millions, took such
beliefs to the U.S. and the islands of the West Indies, where they spread and formed the basis of religions like Candomblé,
Macumba, Santería and Umbanda.
As the tradition flurished all over the world, in Benin voodoo was forced underground, first by the French colonialists
and then by the Marxist regime that ruled the country from 1972 to 1991. The coming of democracy in the 1990s loosened the
restraints on practicing voodoo and in 1993 the government organized the First International Festival of Voodoo Arts and Culture called Ouidah 92. Since that time a public holiday in honor of the faith of
African traditional Religions is celebrated on January the 10th. Benin is the only country in the world that officially recognises
voodoo as a state religion, affording it the same national status as Christianity or Islam. "Voodoo is such an integral part
of Beninese culture mat even people of the christian and muslim faith turn to traditional religion in times of great need
and dispair.
